Secure Digital Cards and its Classes

A Secure Digital card shortly known as SD card is a small flash memory card designed to provide high capacity memory in small size.

This is widely used in portable devices such as laptops, camcorders and digital cameras. It comes in many sizes but of the same shape and different classes.

To most people who only have used a point and shoot camera, you may not know about the classes. When you upgrade your camera to a DSLR, you'll have to know the different classes of SD cards and its significance.

There is this thing called Speed Classes. The Speed Classes imply the level of performance of the SD card. The four classes are as follows.
  • Class 2
  • Class 4
  • Class 6
  • Class 10

The device where you use your SD card has SD requirements for optimum performance. If your device requires a Speed Class 4 SD card, you can use Speed Class 4, 6 or 10 SD memory cards. If your device requires a Speed Class 6 SD memory card, you can use Speed Class 6 or 10 SD memory cards.

I found this table from the internet that best explains the use of each SD card Speed Classes.

Since Sebastian captures HD pictures and records full HD video, he is required to use an SD card withSpeed Class 10.

Now you know what Secure Digital Cards are and its classes, you won't need the assistance in identifying what SD card you need for your DSLR or any device for that matter.
